The people of Barrhaven

Five Minutes With…

Five questions with a Barrhaven person you should know (coaches, crossing guards, organizers, volunteers, owners), answered in writing, in their own words, in about five minutes. The newest one runs on the front page; they all live here. Every interview is conducted through the Bugle’s written interview form and lightly edited for length and clarity.

Five Minutes With Omer Humayun, Unity Audio Canada

Founder, Unity Audio Canada

Most people in Ottawa have no idea that loudspeakers and audio cables are designed and built here, by one man, and shipped to customers well beyond the city. Omer Humayun has been an authorized dealer for other companies' audio brands since the 1980s. He started putting his own name on the products in 2005. He told the Bugle how that happened, why he builds for small rooms played quietly, which is a fair description of most of what Barrhaven is putting up, and who is still buying used records.

What a Barrhaven repair shop sees: backups, scams and the family photos people almost lose

Independent computer repair shop, Greenbank and Fallowfield

Geeks Know This is an independent computer repair shop near Greenbank and Fallowfield. We asked them what actually comes through the door, what they wish people did about backups before something goes wrong, and what scams they see local residents run into. They sent back the following, and it seemed worth passing on to the whole neighbourhood rather than keeping to ourselves.

Five Minutes With Stonebridge Community Association

Community association, Stonebridge

Stonebridge Community Association shared how its Just for Fun soccer program brings families together at W.C. Levesque Fields, and why its partnership with Atlético Ottawa has become part of the neighbourhood's soccer calendar.

Five Minutes With Nepean Hotspurs SC

Soccer club, Nepean and Barrhaven

Nepean Hotspurs SC hosted its first FC Bayern soccer camp in 2025 and returned this summer as an official FC Bayern youth soccer partner. General Manager Shannon Holder told the Bugle what it takes for a volunteer-driven community club to put a world-class training environment in front of local kids.

Five Minutes With Keith Goebel

Organizer, Barrhaven Classic Car Show

Keith Goebel lives in Old Barrhaven East and runs the Barrhaven Classic Car Show at Clarke Fields, now heading into its eighth year, with proceeds going to CHEO. The show is a team effort, Keith is quick to say: Darrell Bartraw was the first to help get it on the road and still helps with the show today, and Keith's wife, Rosemary, and a lot of good friends pitch in as well. He wants them all to know how much he appreciates their help over the years.

Five Minutes With the Publisher

Publisher, The Barrhaven Bugle

This is the first in a recurring Bugle feature: five questions with a Barrhaven person you should know, answered in writing, in about five minutes, in their own words. It seemed only fair to make the publisher go first. No phone call, no meeting: Jay Tarzwell dictated his answers straight into the Bugle's interview form on his phone, in one sitting.
